You may know Kenan Thompson as the longest-running cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” famous for making people laugh with his unforgettable characters and comedic timing. But behind the scenes, the actor and comedian has been quietly managing a common digestive condition that affects millions of Americans: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Celebrities – they’re just like us!

For the first time, Thompson is publicly sharing his experience with GERD to help raise awareness and encourage others to seek help—because, as he says, “GERD is no joke.”

What is GERD?

GERD is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, often leading to symptoms such as:

  • Frequent heartburn
  • Burping
  • Chest discomfort
  • Trouble swallowing
  • A sensation of a lump in the throat

At MNGI Digestive Health, we diagnose and manage GERD for many patients each year. It’s estimated that around 60 million Americans experience symptoms of GERD at least once a month.

Kenan’s Story

Thompson began noticing symptoms in his mid-30s, particularly intense heartburn that disrupted his sleep and affected his vocal performance on stage. He also realized that certain foods, like soda and pizza, made his symptoms worse. Like many people, he didn’t immediately connect his symptoms to a larger issue.

“I would have flare-up moments and not really understand what was necessarily going on,” he said.

Eventually, he was diagnosed with non-erosive GERD, a form of the condition that doesn’t cause visible damage to the esophagus. Through further testing and consultation, his healthcare provider found the best treatment plan, including prescription medication, to help manage his symptoms long-term.

GERD Management at MNGI Digestive Health

At MNGI, we understand that every patient’s experience with GERD is different. While some individuals find relief with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications, others may require prescription therapies or further evaluation through procedures like an upper endoscopy.

Management options can include:

  • Avoiding trigger foods (like acidic, spicy, or fatty meals)
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Avoid eating close to bedtime
  • Elevating the head while sleeping
  • Weight management and physical activity
  • Prescription medications, when necessary

Empowering Our Patients Through Education

Like Kenan, many people silently suffer from GERD without realizing there are solutions available. His message is clear: “If I can help even one person by sharing my story, it’s worth it.”
